Adaptive Shade, as the name suggests, is quite a neutral chameleon by Sherwin Williams. This murky and mysterious color might surprise you with its undertone!

Here we will look at 7 coordinating paint colors that you can use with SW Adaptive Shade, including the pairings that Sherwin Williams recommends.
What Are the Undertones of Sherwin Williams Adaptive Shade?
Before we look into the colors that go with Adaptive Shade, let’s get a better idea of what the color actually looks like, because I find the swatch to be quite misleading.
At first, Adaptive Shade looks like quite a brown neutral, but it actually has pretty strong green undertones. It most often looks like a more gray version of olive.

I wasn’t able to find pictures in time for this post, but here is a look at Dorian Gray where it looks very much like Adaptive Shade:

You can expect Adaptive Shade to look a hair warmer.
Here is one more look at how Adaptive Shade generally looks in real life:

You can expect it to look a little bit darker than Sherwin Williams Escape Gray does on this exterior…
And a little lighter than coordinating color Porpoise looks on this exterior:

In theory, when paired with actual green colors, Adaptive Shade will look more gray-brown or taupe. I haven’t personally seen the combination to say for sure.
Sherwin Williams Adaptive Shade in a Color Palette
Here are my picks for coordinating colors to use with Adaptive Shade, and I am going to ask you to hear me out on this one!

“Hear me out” because I don’t love how this looks on paper, but I am sold on the combinations.
Coordinating White Paint Color for Adaptive Shade
I decided not to go with a true white for Adaptive Shade. I feel like it’s begging to be paired with a lower contrast off-white like Solstice.

My recommendation for a true white would probably be Benjamin Moore Simply White. This color is bright but still creamy.

I don’t personally think that a crisp white will do anything special with Adaptive Shade, but of course you can really use any white you like. It is dark enough that it shouldn’t be influenced too much by your trim choice.
Try Adaptive Shade with Sherwin Williams Svelte Sage or Porpoise
Svelte Sage is a beautiful color, that in my opinion, swatches super ugly.
For this reason, I shall show it to you:

Pretty right? This one is on my list of Best Colors for Sage Green Kitchen Cabinets.
I like Svelte Sage with Adaptive Shade because it reminds me of a lighter version.

In the same vein, Sherwin Williams Porpoise looks a lot like a darker version of Adaptive Shade. It has very much the same chameleon-esque gray/green/brown qualities.

Porpoise is also on my list of favorite Dark and Moody Exterior Colors From Sherwin Williams.
Use Acacia Haze to Make Adaptive Shade Appear More Neutral
If you actually didn’t want the green undertone of Adaptive Shade, and were hoping for something closer to the swatch, you might try pairing it with a true sage green such as Acacia Haze.

Acacia Haze is still very gray, but it is more green forward than Adaptive Shade. This should leave you with a much more brown look.
If taupe is more your goal, you might prefer something from my list of the Best Trending Taupe Paint Colors.
Bonus Color to Use with Adaptive Shade: Sherwin Williams Indigo Batik

When I was putting together my palettes I thought that Adaptive Shade on this wainscoting actually looked amazing with the navy above.

You can get this look with Indigo Batik.
Sherwin Williams Recommends These Coordinating Colors
Here is a look at the Sherwin Williams coordinating color palette for Adaptive Shade:

I’m not in love with this one, but I did try to sell it with this background photo! It came together better than expected.
Pair Adaptive Shade and Sherwin Williams Nuance
Sherwin Williams and I went super similar with our “white” suggestions. I chose Solstice, and they opted for the neutral off-white of Nuance. (Also a great choice!)

Use Adaptive Shade with Irish Cream
Sherwin Williams Irish Cream is just not my cup of tea. This overtly creamy antique white is actually too rich to even be an off-white anymore, with an LRV of 66.

It’s hard to sell this combo to you when I would not personally ever reach for this color. If you like warm peaches, creams, and yellows, you will like Irish Cream (and also SW Casa Blanca), but it’s really hard to picture with Adaptive Shade.
Try Rojo Dust and Adaptive Shade
I actually really like the color Rojo Dust and I even like this combination:

The only downside is that it is quite specific, but the colors definitely do compliment each other, and I think pinks and terracottas are quite on trend.

What is the Difference Between Adaptive Shade and Evergreen Fog?
Evergreen Fog is a gray green, but unlike Adaptive Shade it isn’t brown at all. It is a much cooler color in comparison.
