Why I’m Not Impressed with Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki as the 2026 Color of the Year

Graphic reads Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki 2026 color of the year. Background is Universal Khaki showing its different undertones behind a counter with books and neutral decor. A print of a butterfly and one of a plant are taped to the wall.

Last year Sherwin Williams didn’t pick a color of the year, but instead highlighted a collection of colors. For 2026, those same minds decided they wanted to sell quite a lot of paint (maybe? allegedly?), so they went with Universal Khaki as their “Color of the Year.”

    Is it exciting? No.
    Is it on trend?…Sort of?
    Will it sell? Definitely yes!

What Color is Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki?

Universal Khaki is a mid-toned beige color with an incredibly neutral undertone. Compared to very warm beiges it looks a bit more taupey or gray, but against greiges or true taupes it looks a lot warmer.

Sherwin Williams Univeral Khaki compared to a warmer beige (Nomadic Desert) and a taupe (Perfect Greige).

Now the reason I’m being a hater, is because I like beige as much as the next non-committal girl, but this color is hardly trendy.

Warm whites and beiges took over from gray a while ago. I would say beige has been “back” for three years or even more. You only need to peruse the post history around here to see that!

Graphic reads reads "White walls and accessible beige trim" over a photo of Pure White Walls with Accessible Beige on the trim and door to one side

Valspar Warm Putty coordinating colors features Swiss Coffee, Sparkling Sage, Totten's Inlet, Lush Sage, Chimney Smoke, and of course Warm Putty, all on paint lids over a background photo of beige mushrooms growing in a mossy forest.

So while it’s still perfectly acceptable and even on trend currently to go with beige, this isn’t the sort of “Color of the Year” that I expected. These picks usually predict or start trends that last for years, but I’m just not sure that this one is doing anything fresh or interesting.

What Are the Undertones of Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki?

I would not say that Universal Khaki has any strong or (again) particularly interesting undertones. It could have a slightly green undertone on occasion, but it typically stops short.

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki on a wall showing undertones in different lighting. On the left it is warmer and more orange beige, and the other side looks more khaki.

From all of the real life scenarios that I have seen, it just looks beige. On the cool extreme I would say that it leans towards a stone color, and to the warm extreme, a sunny beige.

Universal Khaki in the Sherwin Williams Color Strip

Here are the rest of the colors in the Universal Khaki collection from Sherwin Williams:

Color strip for Sherwin Williams Univeral Khaki features shades from light to dark: Wool Skein, Relaxed Khaki, Universal Khaki, Urban Jungle, Quiver Tan, Superior bronze, and protege bronze. Background is a universal khaki colored panel wall.
    • Wool Skein (6148)
    • Relaxed Khaki (6149)
    • Universal Khaki (6150)
    • Urban Jungle (9117)
    • Quiver Tan (6151)
    • Superior Bronze (6152)
    • Protege Bronze (6153)

For a collection of neutrals, it’s surprising that none of these are super popular. Wool Skein is the one exception that I have seen used quite a bit.

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki in a Color Palette

I tried to jazz up this wardrobe basic with a few other classic but luxurious colors:

Coordinating White Paint Color for Universal Khaki

Of course being a beige, you can really pair any white with Universal Khaki. My suggestion would be to go off-white to help keep your walls nice and light in comparison.

Universal Khaki has an LRV of 40, which is a little darker than most whole-home colors. A bright white will emphasize the contrast and make your walls look darker.

    Sherwin Williams White Duck

White Duck is a creamy but neutral off-white. This is an especially good combo for exteriors, because White Duck looks amazing in good lighting!

The undertone of White Duck is quite beige, so it pairs nicely with Universal Khaki. You can see a bit more of White Duck in my post: Stunning White Paint Colors for Classic Brick Exteriors

Neutral Paint Color to Use with Universal Khaki

For a coordinating neutral paint color with Universal Khaki, I went with Anonymous.

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki paint dot swatched above a dot of Anonymous.

Sherwin Williams Anonymous is a smokey, interesting, warm gray with green undertones. I was actually expecting that the color of the year might be more along these lines!

Anonymous and Universal Khaki are both earthy, nature-inspired neutrals, so they do pair well together. Sort of like camo!

    Pair Universal Khaki and Succulent

Speaking of camo, I did also select a true green for this color palette with the shade Succulent.

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki paint dot swatched above a dot of Succulent.

Sherwin Williams Succulent is one of my favorite gray green paint colors. It’s somewhere between emerald and sage, and it happens to look great with any and all shades of beige (or khaki!).

Try Universal Khaki with Foggy Day

Sherwin Williams Foggy Day is a beautiful blue gray with chameleon-like qualities.

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki paint dot swatched above a dot of Foggy Day.

This is a great option as a complementary color to Universal Khaki, as blue and beige are across the color wheel from each other.

I think these two not only look great together, but they also work with all of the other colors in the palette, which is sometimes hard to do outside of neutrals!

How Does Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki Look in Real Homes?

This isn’t the most popular beige, so we are going to have to get close enough when imagining what it will look like in your home. Luckily it is a pretty standard looking beige, so it’s not that hard to find pictures that look like it!

Some of the photos I will be color adjusting, using this post as a reference for tweaking the color:

So feel free to scroll through those photos and pop back over here!

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki on Kitchen Cabinets

First up, let’s see a Universal Khaki lookalike on kitchen cabinets!

Warm beige on kitchen cabinets with white countertops.

Let’s try to ignore the warm filter here and picture everything a little more true to tone. The color here is Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter, but in real life it is lighter and cooler than this, so these cabinets are not too far off from Universal Khaki.

I would say that beige is still “in” for cabinets, but it always tends to be a lighter and more greigey beige. The next best thing that I could find for an example was Sherwin Williams Jogging Path:

This is not the right tone, as Jogging Path is quite a lot cooler and more gray:

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki on half of a wall and jogging Path on the other half behind a mustard sofa.

    …So let’s warm it up:

This gets us pretty close to how Universal Khaki will look!

Finally I have adjusted the color on this island to be a color match for Universal Khaki:

The color is warmer here, as it would be in the warmer lighting of this kitchen. The original color was Sherwin Williams Shiitake, which is fairly similar to Universal Khaki to begin with.

    Universal Khaki vs Shiitake

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki on half of a wall and Shiitake on the other half behind a white clawfoot tub and creamy white wainscoting in a bathroom.

Shiitake is lighter than Universal Khaki, but the overall tone is pretty close. It is just a tiny bit cooler and more gray.

Here is another Shiitake example where I made it a little richer and darker to look like Universal Khaki:

Universal Khaki in the Dining Room

This next dining room is a dead ringer for Universal Khaki, particularly in the top half of the photo:

The color here is Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige, but it looks darker than usual.

    Universal Khaki vs Accessible Beige

You can see that in reality, Accessible Beige is quite a bit lighter than Universal Khaki, with an LRV of 58 (compared to 40). It also has a cooler, more mushroom, undertone.

I adjusted this next photo of Accessible Beige to look more like Universal Khaki:

We actually don’t know the color in this next dining room, because it was already in the home when Christina (@ourbouldlife) moved in, but it looks a LOT like Universal Khaki.

Universal Khaki on Walls and Trim

Here is another great example of how Universal Khaki looks in real life, using the similar color Benjamin Moore Sag Harbor Gray:

Sag Harbor Gray does typically look more green than this, so this look is closer to Universal Khaki. (You can see more from this color in my post: Fabulous Sage Green Trim Colors to Uplevel Your Aesthetic)

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki on half of a wall and Benjamin Moore Sag Harbor Gray on the other half with a black and white gallery display over top.

In this same home we have another shade that reminds me of Universal Khaki – Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan. On paper, Manchester Tan is much lighter than Universal Khaki, but on the wall in low light, I find it to be a good example.

Here it is in a hallway where I color adjusted to make it a little bit deeper:

Same thing in this Manchester Tan stairwell, but I changed the color only a very little bit:

This next photo is Sherwin Williams Simplify Beige in a living room, where it looks like Universal Khaki:

The color on the walls is a little bit light, but the ceiling looks pretty accurate.

Universal Khaki for Your Homeโ€™s Exterior

Finally for some real deal Universal Khaki, let’s head outside!

That was the color on a stucco exterior.

For an example using siding, this home is quite close:

This is maybe just a hair lighter and more yellow, but you should expect the color to look lighter outside.

Dupes for Universal Khaki from Other Brands

Now that we have seen a few examples from other beige colors, let’s see some colors that are actually dupes for Universal Khaki.

Graphic reads "Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki" dupes with swatches of Universal Khaki and three dupes. Dupes are Kangaroo, Sandy Trail, and Safari Chic. Background is a cozy cream cable knit.

    Universal Khaki in Benjamin Moore

I had a MUCH harder time than anticipated trying to color match Universal Khaki into Bnejamin Moore. In the end I picked three shades that are good dupes in different ways.

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki background with swatches of Benjamin Moore alternatives and equivalents Pensive, Greenbrier Beige, and Kangaroo swatched down the right side with a leopard print in between the swatches and background to show contrast.

The best overall color match in my opinion, is Kangaroo.

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki on half of a wall and Benjamin Moore equivalent Kangaroo on the other half behind a gray leather sofa.

Kangaroo is lighter than Universal Khaki, but the difference is small enough to be negligible on the wall. In terms of actual color, I feel like it’s less of a compromise than the other two alternatives.

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki vs Benjamin Moore Greenbrier Beige

One of my other dupes from Benjamin Moore is the shade Greenbrier Beige. This is the closest color in terms of LRV, but you can see that the tone is a little warmer and more orange.

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki on half of a wall and Benjamin Moore alternative Greenbrier Beige on the other half behind a white sofa.

Universal Khaki looks a little more gray in comparison.

    Finally we have Pensive.

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki vs Benjamin Moore Pensive

Pensive is a little bit more taupe leaning than Universal Khaki. It is still a great overall color match:

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki on half of a wall and Benjamin Moore alternative Pensive on the other half behind a round mirror above a wood floating vanity on a white tile lower half of the wall.

Basically that means that Pensive is slightly more likely to have a taupey purple undertone than Universal Khaki.

I still wouldn’t say that it’s likely because the colors are very very close.

Graphic reads "Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki" dupes with swatches of Universal Khaki and three dupes. Dupes are Kangaroo, Sandy Trail, and Safari Chic. Background is a cozy cream cable knit.

The Best Behr (Home Depot) Color Match for Universal Khaki

The closest dupe we have from Behr for Universal Khaki, is their shade Safari Chic:

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki on half of a wall and Behr equivalent Safari Chic on the other half behind a mint green sofa.

It is just a tiny bit more gray than Universal Khaki.

    Universal Khaki Valspar Equivalent

The best dupe for Universal Khaki over at Lowe’s is Valspar Sandy Trail.

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki on half of a wall and Valspar alternative Sandy Trail on the other half behind a white sofa.

This is actually the best dupe overall for Universal Khaki. Sandy Trail is a little bit more gray, but not as much so, as the Behr dupe Safari Chic. It does also look a teeny tiny bit cooler.

Here is another look at the best dupes:

Graphic reads "Universal Khaki dupes" over a background of that color with an abstract topographical map. Swatches over top of dupes are Safari Chic, Sandy Trail, and Kangaroo.

Before we finish up, I just really quickly want to compare some very similar Sherwin Williams colors with Universal Khaki:

Universal Khaki vs Sherwin Williams Avenue Tan

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki on half of a wall and Avenue Tan on the other half behind a light gray velvet sofa.

Avenue Tan is a little bit lighter, cooler, and more gray, than Universal Khaki. While each difference is slight, the resulting undertone of Avenue Tan is much more likely to flash green than Universal Khaki.

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki vs Khaki Shade

Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki on half of a wall and Khaki Shade on the other half behind a gray leather sofa.

Khaki Shade is a little bit of a cleaner and brighter beige than Universal Khaki. It’s not quite as muted. Despite Sherwin Williams describing this color as “yellow, green and gray,” I personally find it to look like quite a warm, creamy beige, and rarely ever a true khaki with a green undertone.

Thanks so much for reading until the end! That really helps my blog. I hope this post helped you decide if this beige is the one for you. Not sure if Universal Khaki is the one? I’ve got more!
