Valspar Warm Putty is a flexible greigey taupe that can be a real chameleon! Let’s take a look at some beautiful coordinating colors that will have Warm Putty striking the perfect note in your home.
If you recognize the name, that might be because Warm Putty is my pick for a dupe for Sherwin Williams Taupe of the Morning! (Check out that post for a decent idea of how Warm Putty will look in real life!)
What Are the Undertones of Valspar Warm Putty?
Really quickly before we dive into the color palettes, let’s try to be clear about what we’re working with.
It’s a little tricky to talk undertones with Warm Putty, because we all see things differently. You could call it a greige with warm undertones, but Warm Putty probably looks it’s very warmest on the swatch.
Therefore, I wouldn’t say that the beige is an undertone because that’s a main component of the color. Can we really say “undertone” if it’s right there in front of us? I don’t think so.
I would say that Warm Putty typically presents as a mushroom color, and that can have either silvery (nearly, but not quite purple) undertones, or warmer khaki-leaning undertones (nearly, but not quite green). It can also sway into something pink adjacent, but that is less common.
I haven’t been this frustrated trying to describe a color since Behr Dolphin Fin!
In what could be either a stroke of genius, or a tinge of the unhinged, I took my color dropper tool to several real life photos of Warm Putty, to bring you the undertone of each of them:
Basically, this is how Warm Putty appears to the eye in a variety of situations.
Valspar Warm Putty in a Color Palette
Now that I have tried (maybe in vain) to describe this mesmerizing neutral, let’s take a look at the colors that I like with it the most:
Coordinating White Paint Color for Warm Putty
For a true white to use with Warm Putty, I quite like the Valspar version of Swiss Coffee.
Not to be confused with any number of other brand’s Swiss Coffee colors, this shade is a bright true white with a subtle warm undertone.
A true white like Swiss Coffee will help Warm Putty stay warm. If you want to go even warmer, try a cooler-toned white such as Valspar Tell Me a Secret, High Hide White, or Sherwin Williams Extra White.
Try Warm Putty with Valspar Totten’s Inlet
For a low contrast dreamy and creamy color scheme, consider using Warm Putty with an off-white such as Totten’s Inlet.
This combo will help Warm Putty stay nice and light. For a very similar color to Totten’s Inlet, try Sherwin Williams Shoji White.
Complementary Color to Use with Warm Putty
Technically the complementary color for Warm Putty would be a dusty blue, but I just couldn’t find one that I liked with this color scheme. Instead I went with the blue-undertoned charcoal of Valspar Chimney Smoke:
For something similar, try Sherwin Williams Cyberspace or Benjamin More Soot.
If I was to choose an actual blue, I would probably go with something like Behr Light French Gray.
Use Warm Putty with a Sultry Green
I feel like sage green really helps to freshen up a neutral color palette, while being quite neutral in its own right.
Valspar’s Sparkling Sage is a very light gray green that looks works beautifully with Warm Putty:
Any cooler color like green should also keep Warm Putty looking more putty than silver.
For something very similar, try Sherwin Williams Sea Salt.
For a darker option, try Valspar Lush Sage. This deeper gray-green looks delicious with Warm Putty, and it’s undertone has a lot of depth.
It doesn’t look super similar on the swatch, but Sherwin Williams Thunderous has a similar feel. It is a bit warmer though, so Warm Putty might look a touch cooler with it.
Here is another look at all my favorite coordinating colors for Warm Putty, before we move on to Valspar’s faves:
Valspar Recommends These Coordinating Colors
Valspar doubled-down on the neutrals when they came up with their coordinating colors for Warm Putty!
Valspar’s Suggested White to go with Warm Putty
For a trim, ceiling, and cabinet color, Valspar recommends the soft and creamy Dove White.
Dove White has a creamy beige undertone, and it is actually a dupe for the much more famous Benjamin Moore White Dove.
Despite the softness, Dove White is a true white, so you will still get a nice contrast between your Warm Putty walls and trim.
Use Warm Putty with Frappe
For an ever so slightly darker coordinating neutral, Valspar suggest their shade Frappe:
Frappe is quite like Warm Putty in that it is a greige and a bit of a chameleon. It’s hard for me to think of a situation where I would use these two together because they are simultaneously too similar (in light/dark terms) and not similar enough (in terms of tone).
These could work well together in a whole home color scheme where Warm Putty is in some rooms and you want a slightly darker shade in others.
Pair Warm Putty and Valspar Wet Pavement
Wet Pavement is a mid-toned gray that is much cooler than Warm Putty. It will allow Warm Putty to look more beige.
Wet Pavement actually has a slightly warm taupey undertone of its own, but against Warm Putty I would expect it to look pretty gray.
What is the Difference Between Warm Putty and Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter?
Benjamin Moore has their own use-anywhere greige called Revere Pewter. It is similar to Warm Putty, but a fair bit cooler and a little more gray.
Warm Putty is also a bit lighter than Revere Pewter.
What is the Difference Between Warm Putty and Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray or Accessible Beige?
Warm Putty is most often compared to Sherwn Williams Agreeable Gray:
Agreeable Gray and Warm Putty are found in the same area of the color wheel, but Agreeable Gray is more…gray. It is also a little darker than Warm Putty.
Despite also being darker than Warm Putty, Accessible Beige is a better color match:
Accessible Beige is a nearly perfect darker version of Warm Putty. (I also have a whole post discussing the difference between Accessible Beige and Agreeable Gray.)
Valspar Warm Putty in Sherwin Williams
As I mentioned earlier, Warm Putty is a dupe for Sherwin Williams Taupe of the Morning, and vice versa!
I will say that I haven’t seen Taupe of the Morning looking quite as cool as I have Warm Putty, but I don’t see a logical reason for this. Perhaps there are just a lot more good pictures of the SW color?
I hope this helped give you some ideas for using Valspar’s Warm Putty! If you like this color, you will also love:
