Captivated by the jewel toned luxury of Benjamin Moore Lafayette Green? This rich color is easier to work with than you may think!
Here we will look at coordinating colors that pair with Lafayette Green flawlessly in any home, and discuss Benjamin Moore’s own recommendations.
What Are the Undertones of Benjamin Moore Lafayette Green?
Really quickly, let’s talk about what Lafayette Green actually looks like!
Lafayette Green most often reads like a true emerald green, but it can have the slightest teal undertone.
Particularly if you are using a semi-gloss finish, you may find that it has a cool blue-green reflection in natural daylight.
I don’t find that it ever looks like a gray-green, but you might find that it looks more muted in lower artificial light, because it is such a dark color.
Benjamin Moore Lafayette Green in a Color Palette
Here are the colors that I think work beautifully with Lafayette Green:
Coordinating White Paint Color for Lafayette Green
Because Lafayette Green is such a bold and saturated color, you can really use any white with it!
I recommend using Sherwin Williams Snowbound. This true white has a softness to it, without having an overly creamy undertone (and no yellow!).
I find that Snowbound is especially complementary to green pant colors. If you do want something creamy, try the bright but creamy white of Benjamin Moore Simply White.
Try Lafayette Green with Behr Dolphin Fin
Behr Dolphin Fin is somewhat of a deceiver. Here on paper it looks quite greige, but this color can actually have a subtle silvery blue undertone as well.
I wanted to include some kind of muted gray blue to use with Lafayette Green, so why not have a neutral that doubles for something else?
I would recommend testing it out in your space, because it could stay quite greige against the boldness of Lafayette Green.
Neutral Paint Color to Use with Lafayette Green
For an always neutral wall color, try pairing Lafayette with Sherwin Williams Jogging Path. This go-with-everything shade is a lesser known alternative to their most popular greiges like Accessible Beige or Agreeable Gray, but just as versatile.
I really like the idea of using a neutral earthy shade with the nature inspired green of Lafayette.
I happened to pick a Sherwin Williams color because it was speaking to me, but you could just as easily use a Benjamin Moore greige like Revere Pewter.
Another neutral that you can use either in addition to Jogging Path or instead of, is Sherwin Williams Ethereal White.
This off white has a subtle gray-beige undertone with a whiff of green. It always looks great with green paint colors and it is one of my top choices for pairing with any and all wood tones.
If you have wood trim and want to use Lafayette Green, Ethereal White will pull it all together, and in a fresh way. If you want to stick with Benjamin Moore, their closest color to Ethereal White is White River.
Complementary Colors for Lafayette Green
According to the color wheel, the complementary color for Lafayette Green (the color found directly across the wheel) is a rich plum shade.
If you want to really emphasize the boldness of Lafayette Green, try using it with Benjamin Moore Slip or Mirage White. These much more subtle purples are about as neutral as purple gets.
If you do want to use a darker purple, Sherwin Williams Perle Noir is the neutral charcoal of deep purples.
Benjamin Moore Recommends These Coordinating Colors
Enough of my suggestions, what does Benny Moore himself recommend? (Who knows, I don’t think he does that sort of thing anymore.)
Ahem… Here are the coordinating colors they suggest for Lafayette Green:
Pair Lafayette Green and Benjamin Moore Muslin or Fairway Oaks
Muslin and Fairway Oaks are both very warm neutrals. Muslin is fairly light, but not an off-white, and Fairway Oaks is a more mid-toned beige.
I find the undertones of both of these colors to be too warm for my taste, but that doesn’t mean they don’t look nice with Lafayette Green.
If you want to stay well away from neutrals that read gray, you will like these colors. I’ll be honest, my initial thought was “Oh….” but these colors are growing on me.
If you like warm sunny beiges, you will also like Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan with Lafayette Green.
Use Lafayette Green with Glacier White
Benjamin Moore describes Glacier White as:
“A versatile white with hushed grayish green tones.” – Benjamin Moore (himself probably)
With an LRV of 80, Glacier White is technically an off-white. It’s actually pretty similar to my off white pick Ethereal White, but Glacier is lighter and a bit warmer.
Glacier White ranges in appearance from a neutral creamy beige white to the grayish green white that Benjamin Moore describes.
Its undertone will look beautiful with Lafayette Green, and in turn, Lafayette Green will keep Glacier White looking warm and cozy.
Try Lafayette Green and Clarksville Gray
On the surface Clarksville Gray looks like a rather muted beige, but in real life it does have a subtle sage undertone. (Albeit a very warm sage.)
It reminds me a lot of Svelte Sage and Sag Harbor Gray, which you can see in my post: 9 Calm and Woodsy Sage Green Trim Colors
While I like the color, I can’t really imagine using a muddy sage with Lafayette Green, and I would not personally recommend it. (Although in a color drench by itself, it would be super pretty and oh-so on trend!)
